Cisco Unified Data Center (UDC)—including Unified Fabric, Unified Computing, and Unified Management—is proving that infrastructure choices matter in the effort to build a more flexible and responsive data center platform. This month we highlight the performance and flexibility of Unified Computing, recently enhanced through a third generation of Cisco fabric architecture. Read on to see how Cisco Unified Computing Systems are helping customers achieve measurable benefits.

By Giuliano Di Vitantonio

Giuliano Di VitantonioGiuliano Di VitantonioThe Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS™) is leading the way to business agility and new operating efficiency and prompting innovation in cloud computing and IT-as-a-service (ITaaS) models. Its architecture directly addresses the challenges facing today's data center, and as a result, the Cisco UCS platform is uniquely positioned to meet customers' needs.

Not only has Cisco reached a milestone—10,000 customers are using Cisco UCS today—but Gartner has evaluated Cisco's position as a leader in the 2012 Magic Quadrant for Blade Servers (read the full report).

In the three years since Cisco UCS was introduced, Cisco UCS customers have experienced some amazing results:

Up to 80 percent increase in administrator productivity
Up to 90 percent reduction in deployment times
Up to 40 percent improvement in application performance
Up to 30 percent reduction in infrastructure costs
Up to 60 percent reduction in power and cooling costs

Consider, for example, Miami Children's Hospital. This healthcare provider reduced data center backup time by 50 percent and improved staff productivity by integrating the Cisco UCS B-Series Blade Servers and C-Series Rack Servers into its VMware and Citrix environments. And here is another example: Australian neighborhood-based gaming services provider, Tatts Group, used Cisco data center solutions to improve network uptime, reduce costs, and streamline management. And a travel insurance agency, Seven Corners, enhanced network reliability and performance while simplifying data center management with Cisco UCS, reducing operating expenses (OpEx) by US$475,000 within six months and saving more than US$100,000 per month by reducing network outages.

There are many more stories to tell. Cisco UCS marks a major change in server technology. It shifts the focus from individual computing elements to a more holistic view that integrates separate components to offer big operational gains.

Now the next generation of Cisco UCS technology is delivering even more advantages and continuing to inspire the transition to fabric-based data center infrastructure. So stay tuned: more amazing results and headlines will be coming your way.

Gartner Magic Quadrant for Blade Servers

Cisco Named a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Blade Servers, March 5, 2012

In the report, analysts Andrew Butler and George J. Weiss examine the blade server market, which is becoming ever more complex and diverse as a result of the convergence of related modular form factors, a fast-growing interest in fabric-based infrastructure, and the influence of cloud computing on buying behavior.
Read the full report.

"With so much investment in the concept, and with a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) that will erode the market for other server form factors, the blade server market offers a compelling opportunity for most server vendors—particularly those that focus on more specialized geographic, verticalized or workload niches. The emerging market potential for private and public cloud server infrastructures also provides a natural opportunity for blade (and skinless) servers, as most cloud infrastructures are likely to be based on highly virtualized x86 platforms that are well-suited to the need for easy and frequent hardware provisioning." —Gartner
