An Extension to BYOD: Using DPI for Better Application Visibility

Dear Caro Taylor,
Ever wonder how your laptop finds the network printer? Or how your iPad can find a nearby AppleTV? Bonjour is an apple service discovery protocol designed to connect user devices to network services. Bonjour advertises services via multicast, which typically would need go beyond the layer 2 domain.
So, even though you may be standing next to a networked printer, your device may not be able to discover and use it if it is on a different subnet. With the Cisco Bonjour Gateway, available in release 7.4, the wireless controller will answer device service queries in proxy of the server. Once the client gets a response it can connect via layer 3. Now file servers, printers, video devices, or any Bonjour server device can be accessed across subnets—making it easy for users to access the services they need.
In this webcast, you will learn about these new technologies. You will hear about the value of application recognition through layer 7 to improve a user's quality of experience (QoE) on the network. You will also find out about solutions such as Network Based Application Recognition (NBAR), which uses different applications and has different network requirements. Voice applications don't require much bandwidth but are very sensitive to delay and jitter. Video requires high bandwidth, but can be buffered. Mapping network flows to applications allows proper prioritizing of packets through the network—and better user experience.
